The 1st International Conference on Friction Based Processes (ICFP’2014) will provide an excellent intercommunication opportunity for researchers working in this multidisciplinary field of scientific endeavor. This conference brings together researchers, practitioners and new comers to the field in an International Forum that addresses recent advances friction welding,Linear friction welding, friction stir welding and related processes. It will also serve as vehicle that strengthens relationships between Industry, Research Laboratories, and Universities. Friction stir processes are very promising techniques for either welding (Friction Stir Welding) , grain refinement (Friction Stir Processing) or surface treatment(Friction Stir Surfacing). Similar to more conventional friction welding methods, used since the early 50’s, such processes takes the advantage of taking place in the solid state, which allows them to be applied to materials difficult to join (aluminum alloys, composites, etc…)  Controlling the manufacturing process and its consequences on the end product is a major asset. In this respect, the analysis of friction based welding/Processes and related techniques are of particular importance.
